skin condition that has caused scarring.\u00a0It isn&#8217;t usually a problem unless it causes symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Immediate treatment is needed in cases where phimosis causes problems such as child&#8217;s glans is sore and inflamed, they may have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/Balanitis\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\">balanitis<\/a>(inflammation of the head of the penis).\u00a0There may also be a thick discharge underneath the foreskin. If both the glans and foreskin are inflamed, it&#8217;s known as balanoposthitis.\u00a0Take your child to see your GP if they have these type of symptoms. Your GP will be able to recommend appropriate treatment.\u00a0Most cases of balanitis can be easily managed using a combination of good hygiene, creams or ointments, and avoiding substances that irritate the penis. Read more about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/Conditions\/Balanitis\/Pages\/Treatment.aspx\">treating balanitis<\/a>.\u00a0Balanoposthitis can also sometimes be treated by following simple hygiene measures, such as keeping the penis clean by regularly washing it with water and a mild soap or moisturiser.\u00a0Urine can irritate the glans if it&#8217;s retained for long periods under the foreskin, so if possible you should withdraw the foreskin to wash the glans.\u00a0If\u00a0balanoposthitis is caused by a fungal or bacterial infection, an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/Antifungal-drugs\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\">antifungal cream<\/a>\u00a0or a course of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/Antibiotics-penicillins\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\">antibiotics<\/a>\u00a0may be needed.\u00a0In adults, phimosis can occasionally be associated with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/Sexually-transmitted-infections\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\">sexually transmitted infections (STIs)<\/a>.\u00a0It can also be caused by a number of different skin conditions, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/Eczema-(atopic)\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\"><strong>eczema<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a long-term condition that causes the skin to become itchy, red, dry and cracked<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/Psoriasis\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\"><strong>psoriasis<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a skin condition that causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/Lichen-planus\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\"><strong>lichen planus<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a non-infectious itchy rash that can affect many areas of the body<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/lichen-sclerosus\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\"><strong>lichen sclerosus<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a scarring condition of the foreskin (and sometimes glans) that&#8217;s probably caused by urinary irritation in susceptible men and boys<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/Corticosteroid-preparations-(topical)\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\">Topical steroids<\/a>\u00a0(a cream, gel or ointment that contains\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/Corticosteroid-(drugs)\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\">corticosteroids<\/a>) are sometimes prescribed to treat a tight foreskin.
